American Oversight is a nonpartisan, nonprofit watchdog that advances truth, accountability, and democracy by enforcing the public’s right to government records. They use tools and litigation to fight attacks on democratic institutions, threats to civil rights, abuses of power, and erosion of government transparency.

Location: Remote (US)

Salary: $62,000 - $78,000 per year

Responsibilities

• Monitor news and track sources to identify emerging issues for investigation.
• Craft strategic, litigation-ready public records requests to federal, state, and local agencies.
• Review and analyze document productions to identify key facts, patterns, and gaps.
• Support external engagement with journalists, advocates, and allies.
• Communicate with government agencies regarding public records requests.
• Support document processing and information management.
• Draft public-facing content such as blog posts, reports, and briefing materials.
• Contribute to organizational initiatives and special projects.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• 2+ years post-graduate experience in government investigations, investigative journalism, policy research, or related fields.
• Interest in government accountability and transparency; commitment to public interest advocacy.
• Strong problem solving, communication, project management, judgment, strategic thinking, and collaboration skills.
• Understanding of news developments, political landscape, and public records use.
• Experience working in or contributing to diverse, inclusive workplaces.
• Self-motivated, collegial, able to work independently and in teams.
• Strong technology skills, proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and file-sharing platforms.
