Paralegal

The Paralegal will join a mission-driven legal team at the National Student Legal Defense Network, also known as Student Defense, working to advance students' rights and protect student borrowers through litigation, advocacy, and policy development. The role involves supporting attorneys and policy staff in case development, litigation support, and administrative tasks, with a focus on ensuring fair practices in higher education.

Location: Washington D.C. (Residency required), Remote (occasional in-person meetings and events)

Responsibilities

• Support case development efforts through outreach, research, and producing explanatory materials.
• Provide litigation support including formatting legal documents, cite checking, proofreading, reviewing discovery materials, and case management.
• Serve as the primary administrative point person for the legal team.
• Coordinate public records requests, including drafting, tracking, and maintaining related files.
• Update the organization's website and social media platforms.
• Manage email and outreach lists.
• Draft and edit communications materials.
• Manage the intake process by screening individuals for potential legal representation and responding to inquiries.

Requirements

• Minimum of 1-2 years of work experience, preferably in a legal department or law firm.
