Principal Data Engineer

The Principal Data Engineer will lead the design, development, and optimization of data platforms and analytics applications for HHAeXchange, a healthcare technology company focused on home and community-based care. This senior role involves collaboration across teams to build scalable, reliable data solutions that support advanced analytics, machine learning, and business operations.
Location: Remote (US)
Salary: $155,000–$184,000/yr
Responsibilities
- Design end-to-end data architectures, frameworks, and pipelines supporting large-scale data ingestion, processing, and analytics.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to align data solutions with business and product strategies.
- Build and optimize ETL/ELT workflows, data models, and distributed data processing jobs.
- Implement solutions using technologies such as Python, SQL, dbt, DMS, AWS Glue, Airflow, Docker/Kubernetes, Snowflake, and other cloud-native services.
- Develop best practices for data quality, integrity, lineage, governance, performance, and reliability.
- Establish and maintain SLAs, monitoring, and alerting for data services.
- Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks for scalable and cost-efficient data processing.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to engineering teams.
- Promote engineering best practices including CI/CD, IaC, automated testing, observability, security/privacy, and AI tools.
- Lead problem-solving initiatives and guide technology and design decisions.
- Partner with cross-functional teams to define data requirements and deliver impactful solutions.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, or related field.
- 8+ years of software and data engineering experience with a focus on distributed data processing.
- 5+ years of experience with reporting and analytics tools (e.g., Looker, Power BI, Tableau).
- 3+ years of experience in regulated industries, preferably healthcare or homecare.
- Proven expertise in Python, SQL, data pipelines, data modeling, governance, and security best practices.
- Deep experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and data warehousing (Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift).
- Ability to lead large-scale data initiatives and influence architecture.
- Excellent communication skills for technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience supporting ML/AI workflows is preferred.
- Hands-on experience with AI/ML, LLMs, agentic development, and AI tools is preferred.
- Experience with healthcare or homecare tech (EHR, HL7/FHIR) is preferred.
- Willingness to adopt AI tools responsibly.

Additional Information
- This is a fully remote position for candidates in the EST or CST time zones within the US.
- Travel up to 10%, including overnight travel.
