Senior Backend Engineer

Teya is building a financial platform for local businesses across Europe, focusing on simple tools, thoughtful design, and human support to help merchants run their businesses confidently.

Location: Portugal

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain efficient, secure, and well-tested code supporting critical business needs.
  • Take ownership of features and projects throughout the full software development lifecycle.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including product, design, data science, security, and operations.
  • Build tools and integrate systems to enhance operational efficiency, reliability, and scalability.
  • Contribute to process improvements, focusing on continuous integration, delivery, and deployment.
  • Participate in code reviews and share feedback to improve team output.
  • Mentor and support fellow developers.
  • Stay updated with the latest trends and technologies in software engineering, payments, and fintech.
  • Assist in troubleshooting complex system issues.
  • Help define and promote best practices in software development.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in key areas.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of professional software development experience, with a solid understanding of backend systems, scalable architectures, and software design principles.
  • Expertise in Java (17+), Spring Boot, and modern backend engineering practices.
  • Experience with system design and architecture, including object-oriented design patterns, microservices architecture, and API development.
  • Experience building systems for high throughput, low latency, and reliability.
  • Experience in system design, data structures, and performance trade-offs.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence and align stakeholders.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to debug complex issues across multiple systems or services.
  • Experience working in an Agile/Scrum development process.
  • Ability to work well as part of a team and independently in a fast-paced environment.
