Senior Cloud Database Engineer

Marqeta is seeking a Senior Cloud Database Engineer to join their Cloud Database Engineering team. The role involves managing databases that support their card issuing platform, automating AWS Aurora instances, analyzing database performance, and building highly available, resilient database solutions.

Location: Remote (US)

Salary: $144k–$180k

Responsibilities

• Support all services owned by the Database Engineering teams through a 24x7 on-call rotation.
• Contribute to the technical vision for database engineering, including maintenance and cloud migration of relational and non-relational databases.
• Design high availability and disaster recovery solutions for database architecture.
• Work on initiatives such as platform architecture, database partitioning, sharding, and evolving the database footprint to support business growth.
• Focus on automation and ensure design is tightly coupled with automation to reduce manual work.
• Collaborate with engineers from various teams to execute on technical vision.
• Perform root cause analysis, remediation, and document efforts to minimize incidents.
• Write clear design documents and communicate technical decisions and trade-offs.
• Contribute to monitoring and alerting practices using tools like Datadog.
• Mentor junior engineers and contribute to team standards.

Requirements

• 5+ years experience as a backend engineer and a Bachelor's degree, or 7+ years of relevant experience in lieu of a degree.
• Experience with cloud native databases (AWS preferred), including transactional RDBMS such as Aurora, MySQL, and Postgres, as well as NoSQL databases such as DynamoDB or MongoDB.
• Experience in cloud-based high availability, disaster recovery, and distributed systems including replication and failover.
• Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC), automation, and orchestration tools (Terraform, AWS Step Function, etc.).
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines, job runners, and deployment automation.
• Solid understanding of database administration: internals, query tuning, indexing, and performance metrics.
• Proficiency in Python.
• Experience with Linux commands and shell scripting.
• Experience with monitoring and observability tools: Datadog preferred.
• Strong sense of ownership, proactive issue raising, and accountability.
