Volunteer College Coach (2026 - 2027)

Breakthrough New York partners with ambitious, academically motivated, low-income students to support their journey through college with a long-term, tuition-free program. The organization provides academic enrichment, mentorship, and holistic support to help students succeed academically and professionally, focusing on first-generation college students of color from underserved communities.

Location: Remote (US)

Responsibilities

• Build positive, authentic relationships with students, centering their goals and interests.
• Offer holistic support across academic progress, career readiness, college affordability, and socioemotional well-being.
• Proactively communicate with students via text/email to schedule check-ins, respond to outreach, and follow up.
• Review checklists and share pertinent updates during coach talks.
• Submit timely, detailed case notes after each session.
• Elevate critical student concerns to the Director for additional support.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree.
• Near-peer preferred; NYC-based preferred.
• Understanding of postsecondary education landscape or current industry trends preferred.
• Experience working with youth or coaching young people.
• Ability to engage effectively with youth from diverse backgrounds.
• Flexibility in weekly schedule for coach talks.
• Passionate about connecting youth with community/network for career development.
• Commitment to one-year support.
• Demonstrates commitment to BTNY’s core values.
