The New York Times is seeking a Staff Product Designer with expertise in UX, product, and editorial experience to develop AI-powered editorial experiences, supporting the company's mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

Location: Remote (US)

Salary: $160,000—$190,000 USD

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with product teams across The Times to identify opportunities to integrate AI into products and features.
  • Imagine concepts for delivering new AI-powered experiences for NYT users.
  • Use quantitative data and qualitative research to inform design decisions.
  • Create prototypes to validate desirability, feasibility, and usability.
  • Lead conversations and influence AI strategy with leadership using prototypes.
  • Represent work to leadership within the company.
  • Work with engineering teams in an Agile environment.
  • Champion AI innovation and ethics, stay updated with industry trends, and ensure responsible AI use.
  • Create frameworks to assess the success of AI prototypes and products.
  • Support and uphold journalistic independence and the company's mission.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of experience as a product manager or designer, with recent experience creating coded prototypes using AI tools.
  • 7+ years of experience collaborating with editorial or product teams.
  • Portfolio of shipped work in dynamic environments with changing requirements.
  • Experience designing user experiences with AI/LLM.
  • Experience refining AI tone, format, and behavior to align with brand and quality standards.

Benefits

  • Annual base pay between $160,000—$190,000 USD.
  • Potential for variable pay such as bonuses and stock.
